Halifax Hues
On a quiet day at the Halifax pier, a row of four colorful chairs—green, red, yellow, and red—stands out against the grayscale backdrop of the cityscape and overcast sky. The selective color technique used in this photograph draws the viewer’s attention to the vibrant chairs, creating a striking contrast with the monochrome surroundings. This composition highlights the juxtaposition of human-made objects and the natural tones of the waterfront, suggesting themes of human presence and nature.
The chairs, seemingly waiting for occupants, evoke a sense of solitude and tranquility. The vivid colors symbolize life and vibrancy amidst the calm, muted environment, inviting passersby to pause and take in the serene beauty of the Halifax waterfront. This image captures a moment of stillness, where the hustle and bustle of city life fades into the background, allowing the simple yet powerful presence of the colorful chairs to take center stage.
How we see it
The On a Halifax Pier collection features photos from both sides of the harbor.
“How we see it” is a photo taken during Sail GP in Halifax in the summer of 2023.
It’s a playful twist on the idea that Dartmouth is known as the “dark side” of the Harbor, but for those who are from the Dartmouth side, we see it differently.
I hope you enjoy the shot!
Red Sky in the Morning
This shot was a combination of the perfect storm. The sunrise was coming up and there was a red Hugh in the air.
The light was just perfect for this morning shot.
It frames very well with a border and a black frame.
It’s a good reminder that there is always something brewing out there.
Vibrant Resilience: Chairs by the Stormy Halifax Waterfront
This evocative photo captures a row of five colorful chairs on a wooden deck by the water, set against the dramatic backdrop of Hurricane Lee, September 16, 2023 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The chairs, painted in vibrant hues of yellow, blue, light blue, red, and white, symbolize the enduring spirit and resilience of the coastal community.
Despite the dark, overcast sky and the choppy, grey waters, the chairs stand firm, representing hope and steadfastness in the face of adversity.
The stormy weather, with its strong winds and heavy clouds, creates a sense of dynamic tension, contrasting with the stillness of the empty chairs. This scene beautifully juxtaposes the lively colors of the chairs with the somber tones of the storm, highlighting the resilience and charm of Halifax’s waterfront even in inclement weather. It serves as a reminder that even in the most challenging times, there is beauty and strength to be found.
Winters Palette: A Serene Moment in Halifax
In this tranquil winter scene, a row of colorful Adirondack chairs stands out against the snowy dock, facing the calm harbor of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The chairs, painted in hues of blue, green, and orange, invite quiet reflection amidst the serene, overcast sky. The modern cityscape in the background, with its reflective glass buildings, hints at the blend of history and contemporary life that defines Halifax.
This image captures a moment of stillness and solitude, yet the vibrant chairs promise warmth and community even in the coldest times. It speaks to the resilience and charm of Halifax, where the beauty of winter is embraced and celebrated.
Go with the Flow
The Go with the Flow was an artwork that was made by Kristen De Palma of KDP fame.
This work was on the Halifax waterfront for one summer, it was one of my favorite pieces.
Kristen let me take this photo and put it up for sale.
This would make a great piece for an office space or anywhere people need to go with the flow.
I love this piece myself because it reminds me of when I get in the Flow State to keep going.
Fountain Dreams....
If you have ever been to the Halifax waterfront you may have seen the "twisted lamp posts" they are also known in Halifax as the "drunken lamp posts" there is a great story behind these... you may need to drop down to see the full story.
This one is actually called "Fountain"
I see these lamp posts a little differently.
To me the sun rise shots over the harbour with the lamp posts in the foreground, it tells a story of so many people. The Lamp Post is you. You put forth the best you can, you may be a little beat down, but you look to the good everyday.
May this be a reminder to you.
Serine Sunrise
The fall is one of the best times to catch sunrises on the waterfront. The sunrise comes up over Georges Island and the skies can be electric.
These new chairs were only installed in late October, and they were in a perfect place for a photo.
I love looking at this image when things get busy, I can take a few minutes to stop and see the sunrise.
Canadian Sunrise
On the Halifax Waterfront there is a giant "Canada" sign, at certain times of the year you can catch the sunrise coming up through the logo.
This was one of my lucky days, where the sun hit just right.
The view from the bottom
The Drunken Lamp Posts are one of the most iconic parts to the Halifax Waterfront.
This one is "fall down" the lamp posts have three different versions, this one is the one that speaks to me the most.
The colours in the distance over George's Island, and the way that the light keeps shining even though it has fallen down, it reminds me of so many people and how no matter how hard things get, you can always look to the sunrise.
